So when a cat is picky and doesn't pay any attention to a new food, it's often not so much because of the taste itself, as because of the food impression it experienced as a kitten. As kittens, they learn what is acceptable as food from their mother. Consequently, anything that was not offered as feed by the mother is not perceived as such in later life. For example, if the cat is used to dry food and suddenly gets wet food, it may react in an irritated manner and not know how to handle it.

It is therefore appropriate to offer kittens different types of feed from the outset in order to promote a wider acceptance of different types of food.

For adult cats, it is usually advisable to remain with the usual feed type as long as it is a complete feed. However, should a change be necessary or desired, a lot of patience is required to overcome the existing food imprint. Despite all efforts, however, there are cases in which a feed conversion is not feasible.
