Hypoallergenic menus FAQs

The highest quality ingredients are especially important for dogs with allergies. The Hypoallergenic menus consist of muscle meat from a single, exotic protein source and a low-allergen type of vegetable. This clear, limited composition helps to reduce the occurrence of specific allergies and intolerances.
Depending on the variety, the menus contain meat from ostrich, duck, buffalo, horse, antelope or kangaroo - rare and low-allergen protein sources that are also suitable for exclusion diets, as the dog has usually never eaten them before and they are therefore an unknown protein for the immune system.
The Hypoallergenic menus are complete food. In addition to the high-quality meat, rapeseed oil and a balanced mix of vitamins and minerals ensure an optimum supply of essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.
The menus are ideal for dogs with food allergies and intolerances or for dogs on an exclusion diet. They are grain- and lactose-free and have been developed in collaboration with vets - for maximum tolerability and a medically sound formulation.

What kind of dog is our hypoallergenic dog food most suitable for?

The menus in our hypoallergenic range are suitable for all dogs suffering from a food allergy. These menus are also ideal for an elimination diet to diagnose or exclude a potential food allergy. Because our hypoallergenic dog food is a complete balanced meal on its own, you can feed it to your dog for an extended period without causing malnutrition.

What does “hypoallergenic dog food” mean?

Hypoallergenic means that the food is deliberately formulated to be simple, with a limited number of ingredients, and contains none of the main classic allergens, including chicken, turkey, and beef. The basic idea of this exclusion diet is to avoid potential allergens known to affect the immune system. If the food contains a type of meat that the animal has never eaten before, the dog’s system will not have created antibodies against it. Consequently, there can be no immune reaction. We therefore use exotic meats such as kangaroo, ostrich, and buffalo for pets suspected of having a food allergy. They are considered by veterinarians to be hypoallergenic because the pet food industry rarely uses these types of meat, so they are less likely to trigger an allergy.

How can I know if my pet has a food allergy?

In veterinary practice, the results of allergy tests must be studied carefully, because in general they are not conclusive. The gold standard for diagnosing and treating allergies and intolerances is the elimination or exclusion diet.
When starting the exclusion diet, you need to decide on a kind of meat that the animal has never eaten before, and then feed this meat to the animal for a period of at least eight weeks. Our Hypoallergenic Line is suitable for this. You must ensure that the animal cannot ingest any other animal protein (raiding waste bins or next door’s dog bowl, scoffing treats, dietary supplements or other dog food). If the symptoms improve, you can assume that the product you are giving your dog is well tolerated. Once the exclusion diet has ended, you can do a “rechallenge”, by giving your pet his previous food again. A dog with a food allergy will react within a very short term as the symptoms return. That is how we can diagnose a “food allergy”.
The feeding should only be stopped if the allergic symptoms get worse, for example if itching gets worse, or if gastrointestinal symptoms appear.
Skin problems, especially in the ears, need a long time to react to a change in food - even if we are using the right source of protein. As well as changing your dog’s diet, it is absolutely essential to treat the skin (e.g. washing, treating bacterial secondary infections, etc.) after consulting your vet, to continue the healing process. It can take up to 14 weeks for the itching to disappear.

Should I add something to the hypoallergenic food to make it balanced?

You must not add anything to the hypoallergenic menu because every extra component is a potential allergen and can provoke symptoms. The Terra Canis hypoallergenic menus have been designed by a team of vets and are balanced as a standalone food.

Can my dog also have treats as well as the hypoallergenic food?

The best scenario is for your dog to have no treats at all, while on the exclusion diet. But if he really cannot do without treats, dogs suspected of having a food allergy should be given only treats , containing no known allergens. It is essential that they are made from the same meat as the hypoallergenic wet food you have chosen. You must make sure that any chew products are also made from the right kind of meat. As soon as symptoms appear, you should change the type of treat.

What kind of food is suitable for digestive problems?

Depending on the cause of the digestive problem, the right choice may be completely different types of food. If the digestive problems are caused by a food allergy, the Terra Canis hypoallergenic line is ideal for helping susceptible digestive systems and symptoms of nutritional and physiological allergy.
If the cause is not a food allergy, then you can choose the food that most suits the condition; for digestion problems, sensitive stomachs or intestinal disease, Terra Canis has the correct bland diet, food, or diet food.
