How much should a cat drink?

As desert animals, cats have adapted evolutionarily to scarce water resources. They can therefore concentrate their urine more than dogs, humans and many other creatures, which means they lose less water through the urinary tract.

A cat's water requirements are influenced by various factors, including body size, lactation, ambient temperature, type and amount of food, health status, stress and individual characteristics.

It is generally recommended that a cat should receive around 50 ml of water per kilogramme of body weight per day. This means around 200-250 ml of water for a 4-5 kg cat.

Most of the water is not absorbed through drinking, but through food. Moist food contains over 75% water and can even cover the entire fluid requirement, depending on the amount of food.

Dry food contains less than 12% water, which is why cats need to drink more. Studies have shown that, despite additional water intake, dry feeding leads to a lower overall daily moisture intake than wet feeding.

Healthy cats that do not have an increased water requirement should be able to choose for themselves how much they want to drink. Optimal support can be provided by placing many different water bowls in a separate location from the food bowl.
